I GESSI WINERY

Situated in the Oliva Gessi locale in the province of Pavia, this family owned and managed winery prides itself in producing certified organic wines. Proprietor Fabbio Defilippi collaborates with his brother and enologist Emilio Renato Defilippi whose responsibility it is to follow the long process of grape growing, harvesting and producting the wines.

Their 27 HA of vineyards are located in Oltrepo Pavese (50 km. south of Milan) at an elevation of 200-300 metres. A climate of milder winters, moderate rainfall, and desirable winds throughout the year make for ideal conditions for the growing of such grape varieties as Barbera, Croatina, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling that are planted.

The quality of these wines is undisputable, but a few stood out as exceptional during our visit.
Oltrepo Pavese Barbera, aged for a short time in wood with a further aging in bottles for 3 months. Intense ruby red in colour, its bouquet is clean yet powerful, while the palate is delighted by a dry, full-body and lightly tannic flavour.
Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico “Maria Cristina” Rose , made with especially selected and hand-picked  Pinot Noir grapes that retain contact with the pomace to permit the maximum extraction of colour. The wine then remains in bottles for 15 months in contact with yeasts.

The result is a salmon coloured wine that gives way to a slightly salty flavour and fine and persistent bubbles (perlage). Left in contact with the yeast for 15 months in the bottle, the nose is rewarded with a profound bouquet with hints of yeast.
